Norway’s unique location and natural landscape has created the perfect environment for fish.

A natural home for seafood

Norway’s spectacular coastline, with its little islands and deep, sheltered fjords, has created the perfect environment for fish to thrive. Norway is situated where the warm Gulf Stream and Arctic waters meet, creating the ideal mix of currents and temperatures to support a wide variety of fish and shellfish. This has created an incredibly stable environment to cultivate and harvest seafood.

With nearly 90,000 square kilometres of ocean within its sovereign territory, Norway´s ocean and coastline resources are equal in size to the combined agricultural land of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. In managing this vast natural resource, Norway has managed to achieve a balance between high levels of marine productivity and long-term sustainable fishing practices. 

One of Europe’s best preserved marine ecosystems

Both the Norwegian and Barents Seas are teeming with life, with coral reefs and lots of healthy kelp on the seafloor. Norwegian fishermen can harvest (to quota) a variety of species that are native to the region. There are also a number of non-native species that migrate to our shores to spawn, such as herring. 

Supporting life year-round

We’re fortunate to benefit from a natural phenomenon known as upwelling. This is when, thanks to strong currents and a mix of temperatures, cold water sinks to the bottom and warmer water, which is rich in nutrients, rises to the surface in a continuous cycle. These nutrient rich waters support plankton growth, which is the foundation of all life in the marine food chain.

We harness these favorable natural conditions to support our aquaculture industry. The constant flow of fresh water ensures that our fish enjoy swimming cold, clear waters throughout their entire lives.
